  • New Template - Centos 4 and Ruby on Rails
  • We're pleased to announce the availability of a new OS Template. It is Centos 4 with everything needed to run Ruby on Rails already installed. The OS Template has Apache 2.2 with SSL support, Mysql 5, Ruby 1.8.6, Rails 1.2, Mongrel, and to save you some headaches - ImageMagick w/RMagick installed and configured. If you choose this template, basically you'll just need to setup your Apache configs to point to your mongrel instances, and then you'll be on your way to a fully functioning Ruby on Rails site.

  • New Control Panel Feature - Snapshots
  • I'm pleased to announce that a new control panel feature is available - Snapshots! In a nutshell, snapshots allow you to save a copy of your entire VPS and then restore your VPS from that copy at a later date.

    There are many things you could use a snapshot for. You could use it as a make-shift backup mechanism or you could use it to experiment with different software or distributions.

    Restoring from a snapshot is easy - simply press the 'Restore' link and your VPS will be recreated from the snapshot.

    Most accounts come with 1 snapshot slot. Additional slots are available for $5.00 per month each.

  • Upgrade Your Ubuntu 6.06 (dapper) VPS to Feisty

  • Unfortunately, only Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (dapper) is officially supported on our VPS configuration. There is a bug that prevents feisty from booting properly.

    However, there is a way to upgrade to feisty with a workaround. Its a little work, but I ran through it and it seems to work fine.

    Here are the steps:

    1. Rebuild your VPS - this will start back at Ubuntu 6.06 (you'll lose whatever you had already on your vps)
    2. Upgrade it to "edgy". Change the apt-get locations: sed -e 's/dapper/edgy/g' -i /etc/apt/sources.list
    3. apt-get update
    4. apt-get upgrade
    5. apt-get dist-upgrade

    7. Upgrade from edgy to feisty: sed -e 's/edgy/feisty/g' -i /etc/apt/sources.list
    8. apt-get update
    9. apt-get upgrade
    10. apt-get dist-upgrade

    I ran through this setup and it seems to boot properly. If your machine fails to boot after these procedures, you'll need to start from scratch again - rebuild your vps again from the control panel.
